Lies, damn lies and search engines.

I stumbled across two well written articles on the topic of the search engine wars this weekend.

The first was “Google flings Bing into search engine bin” from a UK site, The Register (“bin” being garbage can for non-Brits). The gist of the story was – you guessed it – how Bing is struggling to add users while Google is steadily increasing its market share.

The second was “Microsoft sites increase search engine market share” from another UK site, EquiMedia. The gist of this story was, of course, that Microsoft’s Bing has increased its search engine share, with an analyst claiming that the Bing search engine “has made a comeback this month”.

What can we take from this?

  1. Both Google and Microsoft have fantastic PR and marketing departments that can spin stories to suit themselves.
  2. Don’t believe everything / anything you read – especially online.
  3. The search engines wars are not going away anytime soon.
  4. All of the above.
